How many times have you been asked as you are planning your wedding, “have you picked your cake yet?” A question I initially scoffed at while planning my nuptials. I couldn’t see how my choice of wedding cake could be an issue while picking out my dress or flowers. Then I realized, when my husband-to-be and I sat down with our baker, it really did matter! Not that we changed our whole theme and color palate to match our ideal cake, but the style we were choosing was heavily influenced by selections from vendors we previously made.
I remember back to my childhood, watching old “silver screen” movies with my mother, hearing the belle’s from the 40′s and 50′s debating the best choice of china pattern and cake for their weddings. When did the cake loose focus as the center of attention for us modern brides? The Fall 2009 issue of Elegant Bride will make you reconsider choosing the cake first! In their article “A World of Cakes”, the designer takes you on a trip around the country and world as inspiration for their cake designs.
There is an amazing cake, which happens to serve as the title page image, that was created for a Northern California theme. The cake has the arches and cables of the Golden Gate Bridge, complimented by red poppies. By the side they placed wine glasses next to a chilling bowel suited with a prime California vintage! You certainly don’t have to pick the cake first, but do realize the need to focus you attention into a theme before making decisions on products for your wedding (especially those that cannot be returned!). Be creative and have fun, and remember ladies and gents… “the theme is everything darling!”

I recently attended a wedding where the cake was elaborately decorated yet made of styrofoam (but it looked completely real) and they just served everyone sheet cake. It saved the bride & groom a lot of money and no one knew the difference! Nifty thought!
