We have all been to the wedding, or have seen it on t.v., where the bride has ordered a cake that hovers over us like Kilimanjaro. The image remains impressive in my mind… but was it absolutely necessary? Well ladies, not for 2010. Yes, sure, the platinum wedding girls will remain the ones with the mile high cakes, but this season the look is cascading cakes. Multiple cakes with fewer layers, decorated on stands of different heights.
Multiple cake table presentation
This new trend actually makes a really nice presentation. It is another option for the couple who has a large wedding planned but doesn’t want the huge cake, or doesn’t want a smaller cake and have to use sheet cakes to feed their guests. Multiple cakes still allow the bride and groom to incorporate a variety of flavors and can be decorated individually or in unison to create an overall theme. Using a variety of stands of multiple heights will give your design flow and symmetry, making an overall nice presentation on your cake table.

Decore and accents
You can mix up this trend a little more and have one of your cakes larger than the rest. Have it more boldly decorated and place it as the centerpiece for your table design. This cake is the cake you and your husband will cut into. Incorporate other desserts onto your table as well. Your guests will delight in a small sample of confections to choose from. You can use bon-bon’s, torts, truffles, and chocolate covered fruits and cookies. Make your table work for you. Use it as the centerpiece of your room design by making it double as your favor table. Place little bags or boxes on the side and allow guest to filter through and grab what they want from your desserts.

Final thoughts
Using this trend will create a table that will look amazing in photographs, and may just save you a little to put back in your pocketbook. Most cake vendors charge per tier of your cake. By making them smaller, you have a better shot of saving some cash. On the other hand, cake for 300 guests is still cake for 300 guests. I haven’t, personally, done any pricing. When looking for your cake vendor, make sure to ask for the pricing. There may be some monetary advantages to going this route, but I can guarantee whatever the cost, your cake display will give some great photos and will leave your guests talking about your wedding for weeks!

I attended a wedding where the cake was actually made of Styrofoam. You couldn’t tell though! They served everyone sheet cake and no one really knew the difference. I’m sure that saved a bunch of money too.
